In January of 2008, Communities In Schools of Kansas was awarded eight AmeriCorps VISTA members to help build capacity for CIS throughout the state. The VISTAs are working on fundraising, marketing, building partnerships, and much more. CIS of Kansas was awarded six more AmeriCorps VISTA members in 2009, including two VISTA members funded by the Recovery Act. CIS of Kansas can now place members in two new areas, Ottawa and Rice County.
AmeriCorps VISTA is one of the many programs offered through the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). The VISTA program started in 1965 by President John F. Kennedy with the sole mission of fighting poverty in the United States. VISTA members, or Volunteers in Service to America, dedicate one year of full-time service in return for a modest living allowance and health coverage.
The VISTA members do not do typical volunteer work like tutoring or mentoring. Instead, they help build the capacity of Communities In Schools from the inside, working on administrative tasks, volunteer recruitment, program development, and grant writing.
The VISTAs for CIS of Kansas are located throughout the state. Two are in Wichita, four are at the state office in Lawrence, four are in Kansas City, one is in Ottawa, one is in Rice County, and one is in Ulysses at the Grant County affiliate.
