President Obama recognized Communities In Schools as a model program when he addressed leaders in education at an America’s Promise Alliance event in Washington D.C. on Monday, March 1.
“We’ll build on the efforts of places like Communities In Schools that make sure kids who are at risk of dropping out have one-on-one support,” he said while describing the strategies being implemented to improve educational achievement for America’s youth.
“While we are often recognized for our successful model, it is especially gratifying to have President Obama acknowledge our effectiveness,” said Malissa Martin-Wilke, President of Communities In Schools of Kansas.
Communities In Schools has served students in Kansas since 1990 when an affiliate was started in Wichita. Today, the Kansas state office for Communities In Schools is located in Lawrence and more than 20,000 students and 83 schools throughout the state receive services from the CIS of Kansas network.
“Graduating from high school is an economic imperative,” said President Obama. “High school dropouts are more likely to be teen parents, more likely to commit crime, more likely to rely on public assistance, more likely to lead shattered lives. What’s more, they cost our economy hundreds of billions of dollars over the course of a lifetime in lower wages and higher public expenses.”
